The Department of International Studies and History organized a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi given by Dr. Ivory lyons, Professor, University of Mount Lions, USA on the occasion of 150th Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The event started with the introduction of the resource person after which the discussion started on an interactive note. The talk focused on the influence of Gandhi in United States.  The speaker talked about many Americans like Booker. T Washington, Marcus Jurvey, Carver and his work on connection between Love and Justice etc. inspired Gandhi. The speaker believed that Gandhi’s willingness to sacrifice made him a True Leader. Gandhi interconnected both Spirituality and Politics. Gandhi’s qualities like Empathy, Compassion, Fighting for Oppressed, responding to their needs, Commitment to Non-Violence etc. made the US look out for a black Gandhi to fight for their cause of the African Americans. Gandhi strongly believed that “To Abuse another person would hurt your own self”, because of which he was a strong believer in Non-violence. Leaders in the US like Benjamin E Mays and Martin Luther King were strongly influenced by Gandhi and applied Non-Violence as a mechanism in the US. James Lawson , a follower of Gandhi began the civil rights movement in the US, training students to follow Non-violence. On a concluding note looking at relevance of Gandhi in the contemporary world Gandhi’s ideas of Non -Violence were to be understood as a philosophy or a way of life and not just as an idea of toleration. The talk was followed by a question and answer session. The event came to an end by rendering the vote of thanks addressed to Dr. Ivory, for giving the audience a new insight on the ideas of Gandhi.
